Personal

Foodie

Like many Gen Zers, I found that one of my first-world problems included hundreds of beautiful food pictures in my camera roll with no purpose. This may have been the pivotal moment towards my creation of the “foodstagram” account @meela.meals, but my appreciation for good food is all thanks to my retired chef father. Paired with my Indonesian mother’s traditional cuisine, I was brought up eager to enjoy the creativity and diversity of Vancouver’s food scene.

Active

Being raised in an area surrounded by the most beautiful mountains, lakes and greenery, it comes as no surprise that I felt pulled into British Columbia’s outdoor adventures. In the summer, you will probably find me at Alouette Lake or finding a new trail to hike with friends. Being a swimmer from birth, the dip into Garibaldi’s clear glacier water will always be a magical memory of mine. But once winter rolls around, I will be practicing my new love for snowboarding on the slopes.

Travel

Travelling to new places and learning about other’s cultures has always been an interest of mine. In grade 12 I enjoyed a high school trip to Europe, where we visited Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Slovakia. Following the completion of my degree, I was quick to take up the opportunity to visit Las Vegas and the Dominican Republic. Meeting people with different perspectives and sharing new experiences are moments I value most from my trips.

Storyteller

Since entering BCIT fresh from high school, it has been my goal to help share the important stories.

A few of the most rewarding experiences from my program included meeting new people and producing engaging content to effectively communicate their stories. A rememberable community voice was Carmel Tanaka from Elimin8hate, who shared her perspective during Vancouver’s increasing anti-Asian hate crimes.

Through these experiences, I learned my significance as an impactful storyteller is to empower silenced voices who need the microphone.
